I love to say that each grape is like a painting in itself. I’ll share what I’ve learned about painting grapes to make them round and full, like you can pick them off your paper. Leaves can also seem daunting. We’ll look at them too.

This class was originally designed for painters who have a collection of watercolor paints. If you don’t already have paints it’s fine. When signing up, let me know and I’ll provide a basic list. You can add to your paint collection if/when you are inspired to after the workshop!

The surface of water is another shape/pattern puzzle that the part of our brain that actually doesn’t paint can get freaked out about. By tuning into what we see, it’s not so scary.

Two grape paintings are in the tasting room as part of a group exhibition through Superfresh Gallery, which represents artists whose subjects are all edible.

We each have our own color sensibilities. In this exploration, we’ll look at colors and combinations of color as well as the work we’ve already done to gain an appreciation of what our own color palette is.

Some things we just get in life. Without any formal art education, we can have a sense of what “works” and what doesn’t as we compose our paintings with our reference material. This is not a day when I’ll be providing any “answers.” We will look at composition, play with composition and see what we see. We’ll also share with each other our thoughts and reactions. Much like our color palette – composition is also very personal.

I’m often asked – specifically about my painting Fauchon Eclairs – how I got it to look like it’s shiny when what I’m working with is matte paper and paint. It’s all about… you guessed it… contrast – again! Let’s look together at how our reference images provide all the information to create the illusion of shine. Our job is to get out of the way and paint what we see!

Watercolor isn’t watercolor without water! Learning this medium requires paying attention to how much and where the water is – on the palette, on the brush and on the paper.

We live and make art in a world of light and dark. There is no light without darkness; creating contrast makes for compelling, dramatic paintings. We’ll look at how that is and will take a look at imagery that gives us a good starting place.

The 115 year old Outdoor Art Club in Mill Valley puts on an annual show they call "Marin Masters." It's one of their biggest events of the year and a fundraiser - this year for Wildcare and the Mill Valley Philharmonic.

Painting detail is tricky. It takes getting your brain oriented in the right way. I love to share this – my favorite part of the painting process.

Green is called "nature's neutral" and its ubliquitous in our reference images of plants and flowers. However, very few green paints work right out of the tube. We wil practice mixing greens as we paint an often challenging subject:leaves!

For the first time online, I'll share all the ways in which I make out-of-focus background shapes. It's about working with the paint, water and brushes.

I'm happy to be back again this year at Marin's finest art festival.

Shape, Shade, Color - Every aspect of painting can be broken down to these three elements – and we get there via our right-brain mode. Learning to see and paint through this way of perceiving is a foundational piece of any representational art making.

3D in a 2D World - It’s straight-forward to paint flat shapes – circles and ovals. But creating dimension requires us to pick up certain visual details in our subject matter to translate onto our paintings.
