I\u2019m not particularly interested in painting succulents, so I said \u201csure!\u201d\u00a0 Last week as Bo and I were walking up the last stretch of street on our way to the dirt fire road we hike on, I glanced down at that same cluster of succulents and had this thought:\u00a0 \u201cif Robin and\/or Sue make a painting from the photo I took, it would be fun for me to have them visit so I could show them the <em>very<\/em> succulent they painted.\u201d\u00a0 In my next thought I noticed how <em>personal<\/em> I\u2019m inclined to be \u2013 even with a succulent that someone else may paint!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just <em>any<\/em> succulent that they\u2019d paint;\u00a0 it is <em>this<\/em> one \u2013 growing right here in Adrienne\u2019s garden.\u00a0 It\u2019s not anonymous to me;\u00a0 of all the succulents in the world, I know specifically which one it is.\u00a0 Romance languages have two words for \u201cto know\u201d \u2013 one pertains to facts, to knowledge \u2013 this one is \u201csavoir\u201d in French.\u00a0 The other is used for people and places;\u00a0 it means \u201cto be familiar with\u201d \u2013 to know as family.\u00a0 The French word for this is \u201cconnaitre\u201d \u2013 though I\u2019ve read it is not the word\u2019s actual root, I see it broken apart as con-naitre, \u201cborn-with\u201d \u2013 which is just how it occurs to me.\u00a0 I <em>know<\/em> the things I paint in this way.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5007\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Reverence-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5007\" class=\" wp-image-5007\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Reverence-1-1024x1014.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Reverence-1-1024x1014.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Reverence-1-300x297.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Reverence-1-600x594.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Reverence-1-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Reverence-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Reverence-1-768x761.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Reverence-1-200x198.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Reverence-1.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5007\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reverence &#8211; (the finished painting)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I don\u2019t paint from random images \u2013 say those I might find on the internet.\u00a0 Besides there being copyright issues, there\u2019s no way I can have a relationship with the subjects in these images \u2013 I can\u2019t <em>know<\/em> what I\u2019m painting.\u00a0 In the 13 or so years that I\u2019ve been painting in earnest, I\u2019ve painted from someone else\u2019s image only a few times \u2013 mostly commissions.\u00a0 However, I just recently painted \u201cReverence\u201d from an image taken by Paulette, an artist in our Thursday group.\u00a0 I think this worked for me because I know Paulette very well and I have visited her garden \u2013 so there is the familiarity I need. Plus she captured the light and a sense of intimacy in that image that just seduced me.\u00a0 Apart from this, I work strictly from my own images.\u00a0 I need to have experienced the flower or fruit or whatever I am painting, in its surroundings \u2013 in that moment.\u00a0 The camera saves the visual information, but I have the direct experience in my body.<\/p>\n<p>When I was preparing for my first Marin Open Studios in 2007, I put together a scrapbook \u2013 in an old-school, sticky page photo album \u2013 of the images I used to make my paintings from, along with a little story I wrote about each one.\u00a0 I have no idea what compelled me to write these first stories, but it\u2019s become a thing \u2013 I write a story for each painting as it goes up on my website.\u00a0 This has further become a test for whether or not I paint something.\u00a0 If there\u2019s no story I can tell about it, I can\u2019t imagine painting it.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Genn\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/painterskeys.com\/two-spirits\/\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a> on The Painter\u2019s Key\u2019s yesterday added another piece to this.\u00a0 He wrote of the <em>two<\/em> spirits in each painting \u2013 that of the subject, the mountains, the person, the plant \u2013 \u201cNature\u2019s spirit\u201d he called it.\u00a0 And then there\u2019s the spirit of the artist and the artist\u2019s interpretation of the subject.\u00a0 We must be present with our subjects \u2013 have a feeling about them &#8211; in order to paint them with impact.\u00a0 This speaks exactly to my experience.\u00a0 I have had direct contact with my subjects, some kind of spark arose \u2013 the \u201cpaint me\u201d I hear them say to me.\u00a0 And then there\u2019s my own inclinations that come in \u2013 I crop it a certain way, accentuate the color, paint in large scale.\u00a0 I bring it through as a painting in my way.<\/p>\n<p>There is a third spirit that Robert Genn didn\u2019t identify \u2013 that of our materials.\u00a0 We also have a relationship with our medium, our paints, brushes, and the surfaces we paint on.\u00a0 I love watercolor paper \u2013 specifically Arches 300 lb. cold press.\u00a0 I\u2019ve tried another brand but it\u2019s not the same.\u00a0 And I love this medium \u2013 fluid, transparent, textured \u2013 watercolor <em>has<\/em> me.\u00a0 I\u2019ve heard similarly about artists\u2019 love of oil painting and chalk pastel artists who need the directness of holding the color in their hand. Certainly, there are artists who experiment and even create regularly in several media \u2013 but it\u2019s got to be just fine to be happily devoted to one medium.\u00a0 Regardless, our materials have an essence that comes into play as we create.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5004\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/plumeria-wip-3-15-17.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5004\" class=\"wp-image-5004 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/plumeria-wip-3-15-17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/plumeria-wip-3-15-17.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/plumeria-wip-3-15-17-300x145.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/plumeria-wip-3-15-17-200x96.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5004\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Almost done. Look for the finished painting next week.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After spending a certain amount of time painting, what I\u2019m up to &#8211; and how I\u2019m up to it &#8211; has been revealed.\u00a0 I sit solidly in the center of my work &#8211; I paint from images I take of colorful growing things \u2013 mostly flowers and fruit, where there is some emotional resonance \u2013 both in my desire to paint it, and as a result in the finished painting &#8211; for those it is meant for.\u00a0 This is \u2013 at least so far \u2013 how art is made through me.\u00a0 Though your way may be similar, it won\u2019t be exactly like mine.\u00a0 On Sunday I was speaking to someone who had never made art before.\u00a0 He wondered if art students would all end up painting exactly like their teacher.\u00a0 When I told him that how we put paint down onto watercolor paper is akin to our handwriting, he got how this isn\u2019t possible.\u00a0 No one else can make the art that is in us.<\/p>\n<p>My sense is that coming home to who we are as artists is a process.\u00a0 As we are learning we experiment and try on a variety of subjects and materials.\u00a0 The thing to notice is what sparks your imagination, where your curiosity is, where your motivation to take action is.\u00a0 This is the discipline to adhere to \u2013 in heeding your desires and preferences for your subjects and materials.\u00a0 Over time we develop a greater capacity for intimacy with these things \u2013 when we can really see them, when we come to really know \u2013 in that <em>familiar-with<\/em> way &#8211; our subjects, our colors and materials.<\/p>\n<p>In an email I read this morning, Cynthia Bourgeault used the metaphor of a braid for how three things come together to make a forth thing in a new dimension.\u00a0 Our paintings are this fourth thing \u2013 the result of the intertwining of the spirits of our subjects, our materials and ourselves.\u00a0 When we allow ourselves to touch and be touched \u2013 to get very, very personal with our subjects and materials, we make art.\u00a0 This art moves and inspires and has its own spirit as it goes into the world.\u00a0 Whether or not we realize it, we are participating in making new life.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing \u2013 getting personal means we have to sit down and <em>do it<\/em> \u2013 we must paint!\u00a0 Simply being in possession of a bunch of images and art supplies does not make art!\u00a0 Devoting the time is an ongoing struggle that I\u2019m familiar with too.\u00a0 One way that supports me to sit and paint is by supporting you \u2013 let me know how I can.<\/p>\n<p>To your art!<\/p>\n<p>Cara<\/p>\n ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In January I took this picture of a succulent growing in our neighbor Adrienne\u2019s front planting bed.\u00a0 It was moist with dew with the light catching the edges just so.\u00a0 I cropped it square and posted it on Instagram.\u00a0 Two different artists who I know and love saw the picture and said they wanted to [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[29],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5000","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-life-stories"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.2 -
