When I was first asked to do this several years ago I was very intimidated;\u00a0 a relative newbie to both making and showing art, I thought \u201cwhat do <em>I<\/em> know about judging art?\u201d\u00a0 It turns out it doesn\u2019t take much special training or experience &#8211; responses to the art are pretty clear.\u00a0 The process involves clicking through four examples of the applicant\u2019s work, plus one of their booth and reading a brief statement.\u00a0 It\u2019s odd how this is \u2013 and I can\u2019t explain exactly <em>how<\/em> it happens \u2013 but an impression arises readily.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing to me how much is conveyed about the artist by just five images and a few words.<\/p>\n<p>There are those whose work doesn\u2019t seem to have gelled quite yet \u2013 looking as if the different pieces of art could have been made by different people.\u00a0 And there are those who have landed upon a subject \u2013 say dancers, books or doughnuts that has become their \u201cthing,\u201d causing their art to lean towards shtick. When there is something consistent about the work \u2013 the method, the perspective, the color palette, the kind of subjects or the abstract patterns they use, along with something ineffable &#8211; however hard it is to articulate it, a kind of light shines through.\u00a0 I\u2019ve discovered it\u2019s not difficult to see the sweet spot between un-developed and over-polished and between scattershot and repetitive.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day I was left wondering about these artists \u2013 what their stories are, why they do what they do and what keeps them making art.\u00a0 \u201cWhy?\u201d is a very potent question \u2013 one that is important to consider &#8211; <em>and<\/em> endeavor to answer \u2013 for anything we undertake, really.\u00a0 In looking at some of the applications, the clearest answer as to \u201cwhy\u201d that came to me was:\u00a0 \u201cto make money.\u201d\u00a0 This is a legitimate reason \u2013 artists need to make a living!\u00a0 <em>And<\/em> this is a very expensive festival to participate in. But unless \u201cto make money\u201d is accompanied by other why&#8217;s, it can lead us to make \u201cproduct\u201d \u2013 as in something to sell, rather than creating to express our soul.\u00a0 I watch \u201cmake-money\u201d at play in me as well. It reins in my impulse to play and experiment very much.\u00a0 Making and selling art has become what I do and people have come to expect a certain kind of art from me.\u00a0 Yet, I feel a strong desire to keep evolving as an artist.\u00a0 It\u2019s a tricky balance.<\/p>\n<p>My real whys are much bigger.\u00a0 First off, I make art because I\u2019m alive, because there are <em>paintings<\/em> in me and because I receive messages from things around me telling me to paint them.\u00a0 I make art to uphold beauty, life and light in the world.\u00a0 I also make art because I am a teacher and I cannot be in solidarity with those I accompany on their painting journeys unless I\u2019m experiencing the often noisy inner-process of art-making alongside them.\u00a0 There is an I-must-make-art force in me that is energized by all of this.<\/p>\n<p>A while ago Sue Rink sent me a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/2015\/01\/21\/to-paint-is-to-love-again-henry-miller\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brain Pickings article by Maria Popova<\/a> about Henry Miller\u2019s book, \u201cTo Paint is to Love Again.\u201d\u00a0 He is preaching to the choir in the title of the book alone, but when I finally got around to reading her article recently, I found it full of affirming snippets from his book.\u00a0 I appreciate his connecting painting with loving, with seeing and how he writes of being in relationship with our art:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTo paint is to love again, live again, see again.\u00a0 To get up at the crack of dawn in order to take a peek at the water colors one did the day before, or even a few hours before, is like stealing a look at the beloved while she sleeps.\u00a0 The thrill is even greater if one has first to draw back the curtains.\u00a0 How they glow in the cold light of early dawn!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I paint a lot in the evenings after dinner.\u00a0 I stop when my body starts to wind down;\u00a0 I get chilly and lose my ability to focus \u2013 time to climb into bed.\u00a0 In the morning when I look at what I did the night before with fresh eyes, it\u2019s almost always a delight \u2013 my labors transformed overnight.\u00a0 Henry Miller further speaks to our relationship to what we are painting \u2013 our subjects:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe practice of any art demands more than mere savoir faire.\u00a0 One must not only be in love with what one does, one must also know how to make love.\u00a0 In love self is obliterated.\u00a0 Only the beloved counts.\u00a0 Whether the beloved be a bowl of fruit, a pastoral scene, or the interior of a bawdy house makes no difference.\u00a0 One must be in it and of it wholly.\u00a0 Before a subject can be transmuted aesthetically it must be devoured and absorbed.\u00a0 If it is a painting it must perspire with ecstasy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I contend that art reflects the consciousness of its maker.\u00a0 Iain McGilchrist says that it\u2019s not only a reflection of our consciousness but it <em>is<\/em> our consciousness in another state \u2013 our art is the <em>physical state<\/em> of our consciousness.\u00a0 Everything that has ever been started as an idea.\u00a0 So, with love in the room \u2013 when we are making love with our materials, with our subjects, in response to the privilege of being able to make art \u2013 the resulting paintings shine with love\u2019s light \u2013 they \u201cperspire with ecstasy\u201d in Henry Miller\u2019s words.\u00a0 Yes, painting is challenging, but love and challenge often \u2013 maybe always \u2013 go hand in hand.\u00a0 The thing is if we are \u201cphoning it in\u201d it shows it in our art.\u00a0 There are a few paintings I\u2019ve done over the years for less than \u201cin-love-with\u201d reasons.\u00a0 It\u2019s no wonder they are still here, unclaimed.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a mystery where our impulses to create come from.\u00a0 What impels us to do anything?\u00a0 Why do we fall in love with a person, why do we desire (to do, to make, to have) anything?\u00a0 But I also think it\u2019s something to pay attention to.\u00a0 Our \u201cwhy\u2019s\u201d live somewhere in there.\u00a0 This applies to not just making art, or even creating, but to all the ways we are compelled in life.\u00a0 I know for me, first becoming aware, and then getting very clear about why I do what I do has changed how I experience myself.\u00a0 It en-<em>courages<\/em> me to progressively allow more and more of my soul into my artwork.<\/p>\n<p>I offer a workshop on color that I named \u201cGet Intimate with Color.\u201d\u00a0 A part of me thinks is a silly name for an art class, but when I reflect on what had me come up with that name, I realize I meant it literally. I believe in being <em>intimate<\/em> with our materials and subjects.\u00a0 Intimate\u2019s Latin root means \u201cin-most.\u201d\u00a0 It requires the in-most parts of us.\u00a0 Our soul is reflected in what we create when it emanates from there.\u00a0 To me this is the whole enchilada.\u00a0 Intimacy is relationship; relationship is connection;\u00a0 connection is the sacred made manifest.\u00a0 It\u2019s the God in me seeing the God in you &#8211; and vice-versa.\u00a0 When we make art we connect \u2013 we become intimate with those who see it.\u00a0 For me, there\u2019s no better \u201cwhy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With my love,<\/p>\n<p>Cara<\/p>\n ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I spent the day last Tuesday sitting on the jury for this year\u2019s Sausalito Art Festival.\u00a0 It\u2019s a big honor &#8211; to be asked to review all the 2-dimensional artwork of those artists who applied to be in this year\u2019s show.
