What makes it even more challenging is, as a feminine oriented being, my environment \u201ctalks to me\u201d \u2013 big time!\u00a0 The dishes tell me to put them away, the laundry to fold it, the piles in my studio to sort through.\u00a0 Even if it\u2019s not absolutely necessary to be done before going away, I\u2019m still <em>compelled<\/em> to tend to it.\u00a0 I just now stopped writing to dig through a box in the garage for my travel journal from 1984 to see if I could find the name of the restaurant my brother and I ate at with our boyfriend\/girlfriend when we were in Dubrovnik 33 years ago &#8211; because he\u2019s there and sent me a text message asking me if I remembered.\u00a0 I\u2019m hopeless at avoiding distractions!<\/p>\n<p>Though I have still plenty to tend to, I have been actually really busy-efficient this past week \u2013 I have gotten so much <em>done<\/em>.\u00a0 Yesterday as I was buzzing back and forth to the car, I was thinking about this mode, this pre-vacation mode and how efficiency experts revere it.\u00a0 They say we should strive to always be as effective as we are right before we go away.\u00a0 I found myself second guessing that wisdom.\u00a0 Yes, stuff needs to get done too in life.\u00a0 But do I really, <em>really<\/em> want to be as on-task, on-purpose as I am this past week &#8211; <em>all the time<\/em>?\u00a0 It feels so good to be clear that I really, really <em>don\u2019t<\/em>!\u00a0 Here\u2019s why.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a different person in this mode.\u00a0 In the PAX world, we call it being in \u201cman-mode.\u201d\u00a0 Actively doing one thing after another prevents me from perceiving in a more nuanced, tuned in way.\u00a0 I don\u2019t notice beauty as I pass by, I can\u2019t feel people\u2019s feelings, I have less patience &#8211; my values even shift.\u00a0 I find myself not caring about what goes in which recycle bin so much.\u00a0 (Those of you who know how I am about trash know this is a big deal!)\u00a0 And it\u2019s almost <em>impossible<\/em> to think about sitting down to paint.\u00a0 It\u2019s <em>nearly<\/em> impossible to think about writing.\u00a0 It\u2019s been so hard to make myself sit down to write that I\u2019m up against my deadline today.<\/p>\n<p>There is a cost to being in this mode.\u00a0 The capacities that feel the most precious to me fall by the wayside.\u00a0 I suggest that if we never get out of this mode, our lives would lack beauty and wonder.\u00a0 We\u2019d have fewer paintings, songs and poems to inspire us.\u00a0 No one would be holding the bigger picture or the deeper story.\u00a0 And there would be a whole lot more grouchiness!<\/p>\n<p>Last week I heard <a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/forum\/2017\/06\/12\/san-franciscos-con-brio-performs-live\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an interview of the members of the band Con Brio<\/a>.\u00a0 The lead singer Ziek McCarter said something that caught my ear and has stayed with me.\u00a0 He said that when they write their songs they are focused on \u201cgetting the message out.\u201d\u00a0 The interviewer, Michael Krasney, asked him why the message is important.\u00a0 He said:\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s what inspires, it\u2019s what motivates, it\u2019s what gives us hope, gives us a sense of purpose in what we are doing on this beautiful Earth.\u201d\u00a0 If these were my words, they would sound to me almost like platitudes, but spoken by a younger man, a passionate creative spirit who makes music that is intentionally enlivening and uplifting \u2013 music that nevertheless comes through difficult experiences, these words sound prophetic.\u00a0 Creativity like this doesn\u2019t happen in pre-vacation mode.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers in my life have inspired me to adopt a philosophy of \u201cyes, and\u201d rather than \u201ceither or.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m not saying that pre-vacation mode is a bad thing \u2013 it is actually fun to rock \u2013 to get stuff done.\u00a0 Like everything under heaven there is a season.\u00a0 So, in the spirit of this day, of my day, I\u2019m going to sign off and get back to my list of to-do\u2019s, knowing that I will be in <em>on<\/em>-vacation mode very soon.<\/p>\n<p>That thought has me take a breath and find myself in a sweet state of expectancy.\u00a0 Last week Sister Mary asked me what I most hope for in these 10 days.\u00a0 What came to me is that I hope we have experiences that we could never have imagined \u2013 those travel surprises that feel like little miracles, along with special times with my loved ones in out-of-the-ordinary places, beauty that will jump out to greet me, because I (hopefully) will be ready for it!\u00a0 My in-progress painting will be here to greet me when I come back home.<\/p>\n<p>I wish for you (those of you in the northern half of our planet) to have the time and space to enjoy these
