I\u2019m sorry!\u201d he says, laughing.\u00a0 \u201cI think I give everybody a fair shake.\u00a0 But I will tell you this, and there\u2019s plenty of people who can attest to it, don\u2019t take advantage of my good nature, because the moment that you do, you\u2019re gone, you\u2019re history.\u00a0 I mean, look, I\u2019m not a sap.\u00a0 I\u2019m not na\u00efve.\u00a0 At least I don\u2019t think I am.\u00a0 I understand that part of it is my nature, part of it is my DNA, part of it is the sum total of everything I went through, and it came out O.K.\u00a0 But part of it is a choice that just says, How do I want to spend my day?\u00a0 How do I want to spend these hours, pissed off at something or you just kind of let it roll off you.\u00a0 But don\u2019t take advantage of my good nature because if you do, it will come back to haunt you and you will hear from me in no uncertain terms.\u00a0 I\u2019ve yelled at people.\u201d\u00a0 Even used vulgarities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Especially for people in the public eye, it\u2019s quite acceptable to be edgy, snarky and sarcastic.\u00a0 We almost expect it.\u00a0 I have to believe that this has contributed to the derision and division we are experiencing. There is a belief that if someone is kind and genuine, if they reveal themselves that they will be taken advantage of or ridiculed.\u00a0 Given this, I really like what he said.\u00a0 A lot.\u00a0 He\u2019s a really nice guy and isn\u2019t ashamed of it.\u00a0 But I also really appreciate that this isn\u2019t all.\u00a0 He has a gate keeper, a protector for his niceness.\u00a0 We assume that if someone is nice they\u2019re defenseless &#8211; and Tom Hanks is not.<\/p>\n<p>Then another thing came across my radar.\u00a0 Artists Eric Rewitzer and Annie Galvin, of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3fishstudios.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3 Fish Studios<\/a> in San Francisco, are friends of my dear friend Pamela.\u00a0 We all sat at the same table at Pamela and Gerry\u2019s wedding years ago.\u00a0 We reconnected through my artist friend Kathleen Lipinski, who happens to be Eric\u2019s cousin (I love our small world) when Eric showed his art at the Sausalito Art Festival the past few years.\u00a0 Last week I was on Facebook and learned they launched a fundraiser for relief efforts for those impacted by the fires here in Northern California.\u00a0 In two days they sold $50,000 worth of Annie\u2019s \u201cI Love California\u201d prints!\u00a0 And with a friend\u2019s matching funds are donating a total of $100,000!\u00a0 One HUNDRED thousand dollars!\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/SF-couple-raises-100K-for-fire-relief-with-I-12276565.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Here\u2019s<\/a> the story from the SF Chronicle.)\u00a0 They asked for volunteers to help print, trim, package and ship all these sweet bear prints.\u00a0 Super inspired by them and wanting to play in all this goodness, I did a stint to help out in their studio on Monday afternoon &#8211; when I had the chance to ask Eric about his <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4657662\/california-president-donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">California Rising bear appearing in Time Magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the election of Donald Trump as president, Eric carved another bear \u2013 a roaring bear showing its teeth and claws.\u00a0 Annie painted California poppies along the bottom and scripted the words published by the leaders of the California Legislature the day after the election:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCalifornia was not part of this nation when its history began, but we are now clearly the keeper of its future.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One thing led to another and Kevin de L\u00e9on, the leader of the California Senate spent a couple of hours in their studio, sleeves rolled up, as Eric pulled a print of the bear.\u00a0 Sometime later, a Time Magazine reporter was in de L\u00e9on\u2019s offices in Sacramento working on the story of California\u2019s resistance to the national political sea change when they went to deliver Senator de L\u00e9on\u2019s California Rising print.\u00a0 The next visitor to 3 Fish Studios in the City, was that Time reporter.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4657662\/california-president-donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> begins:<\/p>\n<p><em>Like many of the other nearly 9 million people in California who voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016, artist Eric Rewitzer reacted to Donald Trump\u2019s victory as if a tornado had swept his house away.\u00a0 \u201cI just didn\u2019t believe he was serious,\u201d says the longtime San Francisco resident.\u00a0 \u201cAnd I didn\u2019t see it coming.\u201d\u00a0 As disbelief gave way to sadness and then anger, the bespectacled printmaker found himself sitting at the table in the middle of his studio just blocks from the Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 He and his wife are known for their prints of a sweet \u201cCalifornia bear,\u201d a version of the grizzly on the state\u2019s flag that likes to give hugs and sells very well at airport souvenir shops.\u00a0 But after he spent 40 hours carving and pressing a giant sheet of linoleum, a vastly changed animal appeared\u2014roaring, teeth glaring, claws out.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019ve stirred a beast,\u201d says the usually sweet and soft-spoken Rewitzer.\u00a0 \u201cWatch out.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I believe that we \u2013 purposefully &#8211; have both of these bears in us.\u00a0 The thing is, though, most of us are wired to express one or the other.\u00a0 So, it\u2019s inspiring, riveting even, when we reveal the parts of ourselves that we don\u2019t ordinarily show.\u00a0 If we go around roaring and clawing all the time, the world pays attention when we are kind and gentle.\u00a0 And If we, like my heroes Tom Hanks and Eric and Annie, are genuinely nice people, the world pays attention when we step up &#8211; even when we show our teeth &#8211; when it truly matters to us.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5387\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/bear-in-studio.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5387\" class=\"wp-image-5387\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/bear-in-studio.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/bear-in-studio.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/bear-in-studio-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lifeinfullcolor.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/bear-in-studio-200x143.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5387\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">California Rising keeping watch in my studio.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>No reasonable person would say that the world needs <em>less<\/em> kindness, sweetness and genuineness.\u00a0 3 Fish Studios is shipping thousands of huggy bears because of our nature to care for each other.\u00a0 But earlier this year they shipped out a whole lot of the rising bear too.\u00a0 It\u2019s also our nature to be fierce \u2013 even if it\u2019s not expected from some of us.\u00a0 I had a college roommate call me \u201cCorny Cara\u201d because of the silly songs I\u2019d sing all the time.\u00a0 I\u2019ve spent a lot of my life believing that I wasn\u2019t powerful, or <em>as<\/em> powerful.\u00a0 When I look at this postcard sitting here on my painting table of the rising bear, I feel <em>that<\/em> bear in me \u2013 the one who will stand up for life, for beauty in all the ways I experience it.<\/p>\n<p>The power of art.<\/p>\n<p>With my love &#8211;
