For years, my husband Joe asked me to paint a Kauai rooster. Ever since our first trips there in 1999—when we were still just dating—we’d hear them crowing and strutting about.
Finally, it was time.
This particular fellow was holding court in the parking lot near Shipwreck Beach, which we passed on our way to our regular hike to Mahaulepu.
Proud, colorful, and undeniably Kauaian, he stood surveying his domain with plenty of swagger.
